AQUINAS GUILD CELEBRATES 70 YEARS

This September marks the 70th Anniversary of the parish's Aquinas Guild. Members will celebrate the anniversary with a special Mass next Sunday, September 20, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a brunch at the Cornerstone Restaurant in Aspinwall.

Historical records indicate that Father Coleman Carroll, our assistant pastor from 1934 to 1941, was responsible for establishing the Guild.  According to a September 1939 article in the "Sharpsburg & Etna Herald," Father Carroll called a meeting of parish women to organize a study group and the Aquinas Guild was born. Its purposes were "to stimulate spiritual and intellectual thought by an inter-change of ideas and suggestions, by means of book reviews, speakers, movies, etc." and "to create a better social spirit among the women of the Parish."

Father Carroll went on to serve as pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Shadyside; he was named first auxiliary bishop of the Pittsburgh Diocese and then became first bishop, later archbishop, of Miami, Fla.  Seventy years later, Father Carroll's vision of a women's group joining together in Christian fellowship and serving the parish remains alive.

Today, more than 125 parish women are members of the Aquinas Guild. We extend an invitation to all others to join the Guild. Meetings with interesting speakers are held monthly from September to May. At our Autumn Song benefit luncheon held each October, monies are raised to support parish, school and community activities. The Guild also sponsors a Lenten mission or Day of Reflection for all parishioners and we funded the popular 2007 Centennial Mission with Father James Sichko.  Membership dues are $10 and can be sent to Patsy Ford, 1003 Elmhurst Road, Pittsburgh 15215.

Special requests will be considered for 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary Masses requested during the regularly scheduled Mass times. The donation for Masses, as mandated by the Diocese, remains at $10.00 each. Payment is expected at the time of scheduling.
