January 3, 2010

Sunday December 27, 2009 Offerings:

Each week, we use this space to inform you about a parish ministry or organization.  Please consider whether God is calling you to give your time and skills to one of these groups!  The mission of St. Scholastica Catholic Youth Ministry is to help youth develop and maintain a lasting relationship with Christ.  Through a variety of programs, events and outreach opportunities, we seek to draw young people into responsible participation in the life, work and mission of the parish community.  For more information on events, see the Youth Ministry newsletter available in church or visit www.stscholasticayouth.org.  Adults who would like to support youth ministry are encouraged to contact Jamie Dillon at 412-781-0186, ext. 20 or by e-mail:  jamiedillon@comcast.net.

Next Sunday, January 3rd. at 7:00pm in our church, the University of Notre Dame Chorale, the official concert choir of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, will give a performance of its Winter Tour.  The program features traditional Christmas carols, choral works by Byrd, Haydn, Verdi, Wagner, Handel, and Debussy, and school songs including the Notre Dame Victory March.  It is free and open to the public, although donations are welcome. The concert will last one hour, with no intermission. The Notre Dame Chorale is a mixed, 60-voice choir composed of students from all the colleges of the University.  These students will need lodging for Sunday evening.  Can you give hospitality to one or two of these students for this one over-night?  If so, please call Brian Dolinar this week at 724-825-6508. This will be a wonderful experience for our parish.

If you would like to take the Offertory Gifts forward during Mass, please let one of the ushers know that before Mass begins.  It is especially appropriate if the family or friend of the person named in the mass intentions could do this, but sometimes that is not possible.  Just as in our own family, we all help to prepare for a feast, all members of our St.  Scholastica family are welcome to do that too!

Thanks to Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy for their donation of $131 and the Parish Welcome Committee for their donation of $50 (in memory of Mary Noel DuVall) for the Good Samaritan School in St. Marc, Haiti.  This brings our total to $1,961 which is enough to provide tuition and food for six students for a year at the school.  Thank you and God bless you.  The next Hope for Haiti Committee meeting will be Wednesday, January 6th at 7:30pm in the pastoral center.  All are welcome to attend.

The Respect Life Committee will have the annual Pancake and Sausage Breakfast on Sunday morning, Jan. 10. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Tickets are $4 for a regular serving and $3 for a small serving.  This is our only fund raiser.  Proceeds will supplement the bus to Washington for the MARCH FOR LIFE, Baptism presentations, the Disability Mass and supper, etc.  We are grateful for your support.

Religious Education will resume January 5th.  We extend warm holiday wishes and thanks to all of our catechists, small group leaders and teen volunteers!

Would you like to be a voice for the 4.8 million unborn babies that have been legally killed by abortion in America since 1973?  Please join us for the annual Parish pilgrimage to Washington D.C. for the MARCH FOR LIFE.  Our bus leaves at 12:30am on January 22.  We will attend Mass with Archbishop Wuerl at the Verizon Center, join the MARCH up Constitution Avenue, and meet with Senators Casey and Specter.  $25 will cover the cost of the bus and breakfast at St. Marks Church in Vienna, Virginia.  Please call (412)781-6550 for information and reservations.

There is less than a week left to sign up for Retrouvaille. Retrouvaille is a program for married couples who feel bored, frustrated, or angry in their marriages. Some experience coldness and simply shut down. Others experience conflict and arguments in their relationship. Most don't know how to change the situation or even communicate with their spouse about it. This program has helped 10s of 1000s of couples experiencing marital difficulty at all levels including disillusionment and deep misery. For confidential information about, or to register for the upcoming program beginning with a weekend on January 8 , please contact Retrouvaille at 412-277-3434. More information is available at www.helpourmarriage.com.
