EASTER -  NEW SHOOTS OF LIFE

I once knew a parishioner who always answered "the same old – the same old" to the question "How are you?"  This answer of his reflected his dismal view of life and his feeling that his future was not looking great.  I'm sure that if I asked him how his Easter was, he would respond "the same old – the same old!!"  The real issue for us in this Easter of 2010 is not just the "historical fact" that the man Jesus was killed on a cross, was buried and now is raised up, but the real issue is:  Are we still in the dark pit or are we now living a "resurrected life?"  Today's feast of the Resurrection of Jesus is not just about our future with the Lord Jesus, but also it is about the NOW.

The challenge that faces us is whether we hear the voice of God's Spirit calling us to "rise up" from our entombment and to trust more fully, to hope more intently and to love more tenderly.  It is so easy to celebrate Easter as just another "holiday", rather than a celebration of new hope and new beginnings.  As we heard in the Lenten readings:  "Behold, I am doing something new!"  Easter is the choice to strip off the "old self" and to "put on Christ".  Letting go of our old self means to be an agent of resurrection to those around us- to be "angels of light" rather than to hold on to old hurts, anger and cynicism.

So if someone asks you:  "How are things going?"  You can respond: "The same old – the same old!"  Or you can say: "I am so blessed and loved by God!"
