MESSAGE FROM FR. KEN

I will be away from the parish this week (May 24 – 29). I will be on vacation for R&R. You will notice that we have published weekday mass times for our neighboring parishes. This past week I have celebrated my 42nd year as a priest. I was ordained in 1968 by Bishop John Wright. Also, believe it or not, in six weeks (July 7) I will celebrate that I have completed two years as your pastor!! I feel very much at home here and am grateful that Bishop Zubik appointed me as pastor. Thank you for a great two years and for your commitment to the parish community and your words of support to me. I am most grateful and graced.

Fr. Ken

DIOCESAN SAFE ENVIRONMENT GUIDELINES

This is a reminder that the Diocese of Pittsburgh requires all volunteer ministers who have any contact with children (including, but not limited to, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and choir members) to fulfill Safe Environment requirements. This includes 1) an application on the online diocesan database; 2) a PA Dept. of Public Welfare Child Abuse Clearance certificate; 3) a signed copy of the Code of Pastoral Conduct; and 4) attendance at a Protecting God's Children workshop. In the near future, volunteer ministers will receive information detailing their status with the guidelines. For your convenience, we will hold Protecting God's Children workshops at the parish in the next month. If you'd prefer another option, St. Edward's in Blawnox is hosting a PGC session on Saturday, May 22 at 9am. Please call 412-828-4066 to register. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mary Swindal, parish Safe Environment Coordinator, at 412-781-0186 or mswindal@saintscholastica.com.

KEEP IN YOUR PRAYERS

Please pray for Viola Haller and give comfort to her friends and family during this time of mourning.

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

In preparation for a new Ministry of Praise prayer list, please put prayer requests in the boxes in the vestibule of the church or call Mary Catherine at 412-781-6550.

PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN

The parish is hosting a PGC workshop for parish and school volunteers who need to fulfill this component of diocesan safe environment requirements on Thursday, May 27 at 7pm in the Pastoral Center. Please call the parish office, 412-781-0186 x10 and leave a message to register. Thank you.

SENIOR RECOGNITION NIGHT

Saturday, June 5th at the 5:00 mass followed by a picnic with live music on the lawn. If you are planning to attend please email: jamiedillon@comcast.net.

COME AND SEE

Are you curious about the Catholic Church? Have you been attending Mass with your spouse and want to investigate taking the next step? Do you want to look into the possibility of living as a Catholic? Plan to attend an information session on Wednesday evening, June 2 at 7:30 in Marsico Library in the Ministry Center. You will learn a little about Catholicism and about the process the Church uses to help people discern whether they want to become Catholics. You can also raise any questions you have in a friendly, open environment. Attending this meeting imposes no further obligation or commitment. Walk-ins are welcome, but if you know in advance that you would like to attend, please inform Andy Bechman at 412-781-0186, Ext. 18, or by e-mail: abechman@verizon.net.

RCIA PROFILE: Lauren Gagliardino

Lauren Gagliardino (with tongue in cheek) describes her profession as "domestic goddess." That is, she is a homemaker who takes care of her children Will (age 2) and Vivian (1). She is married to William Gagliardino, and the family lives in Fox Chapel. Lauren was born and grew up in Pittsburgh, and was baptized at St. Scholastica. She did not receive religious training as a child, though, and did not receive any other sacraments. She lived in South Carolina for a time as an adult, and attended the Episcopal Church there. On moving back to Pittsburgh, she met Bill and they eventually married. It was his Catholic faith, Lauren says, that inspired her to return to Catholic practice and raise their children in the faith. She credits her experience in the RCIA with helping her to "fine tune my ideas of God, understand the mechanics of the Church, and feel comfortable in a new community." One highlight of her experience was "making it through" the Sacrament of Reconciliation, but her most vivid memory is of the Easter Vigil, where she was confirmed and received Eucharist for the first time. She recalls being welcomed into the community "with a hug from Fr. Ken, no less!" surrounded by the RCIA team, her family and friends and the entire parish community. She says: "I experienced an overwhelming sense of belonging." The RCIA Team can testify to how Lauren threw herself into the process with great enthusiasm (and sometimes trepidation—see the aforementioned sacrament of Reconciliation!) Her vibrant presence enriched the RCIA this year for all who participated in it. Asked what she would tell someone who is considering entering the Church through the RCIA, Lauren says: "It is well worth the journey. Doors will open for you when it is least expected." Congratulations to Lauren, and welcome to our parish community!
