REFLECTING ON THE WORD

At some point in their development, children go through the "me" phase. Everything is about "me". This is when "no" becomes a frequent word in their vocabulary. Sometimes the "me" phase extends into adulthood, with everything continuing to be about "me, me, me".

Take the man in the parable. His inner dialogue is all about "me". "What shall I do?" he asks himself in the face of a plentiful harvest. Then we hear his thoughts: "This is what I shall do," since I don't have space. "I shall tear down my barns and build...I shall store all my grain...I shall say to myself" (Luke 12:17, 18), and so on. The only time "you" enters into the conversation is when he is talking to himself.

Jesus tells this story to a man who wants Jesus to advise his brother to share an inheritance with him. Another "me" person. Jesus' warning to the man and those standing around is to guard against greed, that life is not about things. Qoheleth too, warns about being preoccupied with all that is passing.

The author of Colossians calls us to "seek what is above" (Colossians 3:1), attend to what lasts, put on Christ, live in intimacy with the Father as Jesus did. Be a "we" person, rather than a "me" person. When we gather for Mass on Sunday, we come together as a "we" people. We say or sing together the great hymn of Glory to God in the highest; we prefess our faith as a community; we pray "Our Father". It's about We not Me.

.INVITATION FROM FR. KEN

Now that we are in the "dog days" of summer and the pace of life is not as hectic, I would like to invite you to have a conversation with me. Now that I have completed two years as pastor, this is a good time for "listening sessions". You hear me talk to you during my Sunday homilies, now I would like the "view from the pews". I invite you to share with me on any issue that is of concern to you, whether it is a personal issue, or one that relates to parish life or issues that face the church in general. I envision these conversations to be about a half hour in length and in the privacy of my office in the Pastoral Center. Just email me or call me at (412)781-0186, extension 14 and we can set up a time that works for the both of us. Fr. Ken
