There are moments of life that we call "glorious", special times beyond ordinary experience, that give us a hint of transcendence, a glimpse of glory, whether it is a "glorious day" in spring or a "glorious occasion" like a wedding.  Such times lift our spirits and hearts and we feel transported to a different level of awareness and know a joy beyond words.  Such are moments of glory.

We hear the words "glory" and "glorify" five times in the opening verses of  today's Gospel as Jesus prays to his Father.  In John's Gospel this is the last recorded prayer of Jesus, since John does not have Jesus praying in the garden.

Jesus begins his prayer by telling the Father the "hour" has come, that is, the hour of revelation, the time when the Father will give glory to the Son and the Son will glorify the Father.  It is the moment when the Son is "lifted up" which refers to both the lifting up on the cross and the Resurrection.  Jesus has said: "And when I am lifted up, I will draw all things to myself." (John 12:32).

This mutual glorifying that characterizes the relationship between the Father and the Son also embraces the disciples.   Jesus says at the end of today's reading that he prays "for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine and I have been glorified in them." (John 17:10).

Amount Needed:

Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh is in need of teenage volunteers for its summer youth program, June 20 - July 22, which helps teenagers who are blind or vision impaired prepare for college or a career. Teenage volunteers accompany students to places like Kennywood, Pirate baseball games, Sandcastle and camping or just spend time with them in the evening. Volunteer schedules are flexible, and training is provided. BVRS also is in need of adult volunteers. For more information, contact Nancy Schepis, volunteer coordinator, 412-368-4400 or nschepis@pghvis.org.

A preparation session for the parents of children who are scheduled to be baptized in the parish will be held this Monday evening, June 6, at 7:30 in the parish office. The session will provide parents an opportunity to reflect upon the meaning of the sacrament and to walk through the ceremony itself.  If you plan to attend the session and have not already been in communication with Andy Bechman, please contact him (see the staff contact information in this bulletin).  Please make arrangements for the baptism itself with the parish secretary at least two weeks before your desired date.

Join us this summer for a drop-in Bible study. There is no need to commit for multiple sessions, just come when you can!  You can join other parishioners in a relaxed summer setting, become more comfortable with reading the Scriptures, and prepare yourself for Mass on Sunday. Initially, we will use the next Sunday's Scripture readings as our focus. Each week, you can choose between a Tuesday evening meeting from 7:30 to 8:45 in Marsico Library in the Ministry Center OR a Thursday morning meeting from 10:00-11:15 in the north room (near the kitchen) of the Pastoral Center. Tuesday sessions will meet on June 21 & 28 and July 5 & 12; Thursday sessions on June 23 & 30 and July 7 & 14. If interest warrants, we will continue the study further into the summer. We will provide study materials. No registration is necessary and there is no fee, although we will accept contributions toward the materials and toward refreshments.  Questions? Contact Andy Bechman at andybechman@saintscholastica.com.

Everyone is invited to the Pastoral Center after the 9:00am and 11:00am Masses on Pentecost Sunday.  We especially invite all new parishioners.  Coffee, tea, juice and breakfast foods will be served.  Please stop by to extend a warm welcome to the newest members of our parish!
