A NOTE FROM FATHER TORQUATO
It’s time for Lent already!  Yes, this Wednesday, February 10, all Christians throughout the world will observe Ash Wednesday and the first day of the Season of Lent.  As Catholic Christians, even though this is not a Day of Obligation, many of us will gather in our parish church for the Liturgy or prayer and the reception of ashes.
The ashes of Ash Wednesday are NOT a mark of our faithfulness and holiness.  Rather, the ashes are an admission of our infidelity and our sinfulness.  Now is the time to be clear-minded and sober.  Now is the time for us to rededicate ourselves to the Lord and his life and holiness.  Best wishes for a good and grace-filled Lent.  God bless!
                                                                       —Father Jim Torquato

OUR NEW 2016 PARISH SHARE CAMPAIGN
This week, our Diocese will begin the 2016 Parish Share Campaign in order to collect the funds needed to support our Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh during the coming fiscal year.  All of our 200 parish communities are asked to reach the goal set by the Diocese based on last year’s parish total income.
Our Parish Share Campaign assessment for 2016 is $74,497.   Each of our households is asked to pledge and contribute  $250 or more  as in past years.   Your generous donations provide the financial means needed for the work of Bishop David Zubik, for his administrative staff, and for the numerous projects that benefit the people of our Diocesan Church.  You’ll receive information in the mail.  Please be generous once again, and help us to meet our goal in 2016!

COFFEE SOCIAL THIS WEEKEND IN THE HALL
This weekend, February 6-7, several members of our parish Pastoral Council will host both a Saturday Punch and Cookie social and a Sunday Coffee/Tea and donut event in the parish hall after all Liturgies!
These gatherings will coincide with Mardi Gras as well as the traditional memorial day of our patron Saint Scholastica which is February 10  (but which is superseded by Ash Wednesday this year)!
Everyone is welcome to come together, meet other members, and spend some time with one another!  Plan to join us and bring your families and friends!

AQUINAS GUILD MARDI GRAS LUNCHEON
It’s time for the Aquinas Guild’s Ladies’ Mardi Gras Luncheon!  Join us at the Cornerstone Restaurant this Tuesday, February 9, at 11:30am.  Reservations are required. Please call  Joanne Saunders (412-963-8319) by this Tuesday afternoon.   Come celebrate with us . . . and bring your Mardi Gras beads!

ASH WEDNESDAY AND THE START OF LENT
The season of Lent will begin on February 10 with the celebration of Ash Wednesday.  We prepare for Easter during Lent, and we strive to become more like Jesus as people of holiness, charity, and prayer.
We will celebrate the Mass at 8:30am, then prayer services at 12 noon and 4:00pm, and then another Mass at 7:00pm.   Ashes are distributed after the Homily during the Liturgy.  Please plan to join us on February 10 for Ash Wednesday and this year’s Season of Lent!    (This is NOT a Day of Obligation.)

OUR CATHOLIC PRACTICES FOR LENT
Most Catholic Christians know all about our Lenten practices, but in case you’d like a reminder . . . Lent is our time to return to the Lord though conversion, repentance and holiness, AND Lent is our time to prepare for the celebration of the Resurrection at Easter.  Our regular practices include:  prayer, penance and fasting, and charity.
In addition, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are Days of Fasting (only one full meal for those ages 18-59  —  OR  if you have a serious medical condition, you may perform some other act of penance) and Abstaining from Meat (beginning age 14).  Also, the Fridays of Lent require our Abstaining from Meat.
In addition to these basic requirements, all of us are called to conversion and the transformation of our lives with the help of God’s grace!  Please make this Lent a truly Holy Season so that you’ll draw closer to the Lord and be prepared to celebrate his glorious Resurrection and the Easter Season with great joy!

UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE
If you’d like a deeper relationship with God and a better understanding of our faith, join us for Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible—an eight part video series of presentations offered by well known Catholic Bible scholar Jeff Cavins.  This program will meet on 8 Wednesdays at 7:30pm in the Ministry Center Library beginning February 17.  Register before Ash Wed., February 10 by calling the office, or send an email to Andrew Bechman here.  The donation for materials is $20 payable at the first session. Join us, and learn the “Big Picture” of the Bible!

Jesus calls all people to himself!
Jesus came to us from among the first people of God — the people of Israel.  Then, in his own public ministry, Jesus inaugurated the very Kingdom of God which has grown ever since then.  What a humble beginning to the Kingdom.  Now, we’re called to assist Jesus like the Apostles, and bring many others to the Lord!

Our Saint Scholastica Parish Mission is to continue the work of Christ together as a faith community, through the celebration of the Sacraments, living spiritually in the world, and working to be caring members of the community.  As committed Catholics, we are sent to bear the Light of Christ to transform the world by our devotion, service and witness.
