Saint Scholastica Parish of the Lower Allegheny Valley Catholic Community

ONE Parish Bulletin: The weekend of October 12-13, 2019 will introduce a new look to the parish bulletin for the four parishes of Saint Joseph, Saint Juan Diego, Saint Padre Pio and Saint Scholastica. It will be larger in scope, present a different sacred image on the front cover each week, share a newly created logo, and provide information pertinent to each of the four parishes. Another step forward in acknowledging that we believe in One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism.

TIME, TALENT & TREASURE
Our local homeless ministry appreciates your help! These items are needed now: Hamburger Helper-type prepared meal mixes, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, canned soup, and powdered milk. Please leave donations in plastic bags. Gray bins are in the church entrance.
Larger donations in bags (NOT boxes) and ALL clothing may be brought to the SIDE DOOR of 316 Third Street, Aspinwall, from 10am-12noon on Mondays and Fridays. Please do NOT leave any donations outside 316 or 318 Third Street. Thank you!

The Donation bin for the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, run by Saint Juan Diego Parish in Sharpsburg, is sponsored by our Aquinas Guild. Your donations of paper products  and cleaning products — and any non-perishable items — are most welcome. Please put donations in the red bin in the church’s main entrance.

Saint Vincent de Paul envelope: We have added a monthly donation envelope for Saint Scholastica’s Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. This parish ministry works to provide local families with food, clothing, rental and utility assistance. In recent years they have seen an increase in the number of aid requests, so they are grateful for any contributions the parish can provide. Money put in the poor boxes at the church entrances also helps fund this organization’s charitable efforts.

Men's and Women's Shelter Meals: Once a month, Saint Joseph Parish provides meals and servers at two area homeless shelters—Bethlehem Haven and East End Cooperative Ministry (located in Community House in East Liberty). Providing a meal for homeless people is a great way for families, couples or individuals to help the less fortunate. Volunteering to prepare a meal and/or to serve at the Men’s and Women’s Shelters is not just a good humanitarian deed. It is downright Christian. "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do unto me." Won't you consider being a part of this ministry of service?
Sign-up sheets are on the counter of the vestibule in Saint Joseph Church. The Women's Shelter meal is on the 1st Wednesday of every month. Volunteers leave for the shelter at 5:15pm from the parking lot of Saint Joseph Church. The Men's Shelter meal is on the 4th Saturday of every month. Volunteers leave for the shelter at 6:15pm from the parking lot of Saint Joseph Church. For more information contact Women's Shelter Co-ordinator Melissa Kosak  at 412-352-7543 or by email here; Men's Shelter Co-ordinators Trudi Annett at 412-849-0216 or Terri Weir at 412-781-7463 or by email here.

The Out of the Darkness Walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will be held on Saturday, August 17, at Highmark Field near Station Square. This event raises awareness about suicide, provides education and raises funds for research, support for survivors, and education. If you have been touched by suicide, or even if you have not, you are encouraged to attend. There will be information tables from various related organizations and a short program which begins at 10:30am followed by a 5k walk. Free registration online at www.afsp.org (+), or at the gate beginning at 9am.

Our Saint Scholastica Parish Mission is to continue the work of Christ together as a faith community, through the celebration of the Sacraments, living spiritually in the world, and working to be caring members of the community.  As committed Catholics, we are sent to bear the Light of Christ to transform the world by our devotion, service and witness.
